The Santa Fe County Treasurer’s Office, the property tax collector for the County of Santa Fe, now offers the option of paying taxes online with a credit card. Residents may still pay by mail or deliver payments in person.

Notice: Santa Fe County has entered into an agreement with First Community Bank to process credit card payments. First Community Bank/Pay Point charges a convenience fee for these services. Currently the credit card processing fee is 2.35% per payment. Santa Fe County does not retain any portion of this fee. To avoid paying convenience fees you may pay taxes or other fees in person or by U.S. mail.

Mission Statement

The County Treasurer is the Property Tax Collector and Investment Officer for Santa Fe County. Approximately 60,000 real property, personal property and mobile home tax bills are sent out annually. We also send out 24,000 informational tax bills annually to notify taxpayers who escrow their property taxes that either a mortgage company or taxpaying service has requested their tax bill. The Treasurer has also implemented a process of sending out two delinquent tax notices semi-annually usually scheduled for mid February and mid August.

The Treasurer’s Office also serves as the “County’s Banker” and is responsible for collecting and depositing monies from property tax collections and from all operations of County departments i.e. refuse permits, utilities, land use permits, ambulance fees, and other services the County may provide. For 2008 the Treasurer’s office was scheduled to collect $133,476,019.00 and thru October 31, 2000 collected $127,649,556.12 for a collection rate of 95.64%.

Investments

As the Investment Officer for the County the Treasurer, invests in U.S. Treasuries, Government Agencies, and Certificates of Deposit in excess of $250,000 collateralized @ 102% through the pledging of securities or irrevocable letters of credit as permitted by the County’s Investment Policy. Investments are made in safe, liquid and diversified investments earning a market rate of interest on all funds not immediately required to meet the County’s cash flow needs. The majority of the investments are made in local banks in Santa Fe County to stimulate and improve the economy of Santa Fe County and its residents.

The Treasurer is the Paying Agent and Registrar for all bond debt issued by Santa Fe County; and invests (voter approved) bond proceeds in short term government agencies and CD’s laddered to mature when needed for the intended projects.

Distributions

Taxes collected by the Treasurer are distributed to the statutory beneficiaries of the County which include Santa Fe Public Schools, Pojoaque Public Schools, Espanola Public Schools, Moriarty Public Schools, Santa Fe Community College, Edgewood Soil and Water District, and the Eldorado Water and Sanitation District. Approximately 40% of all taxes collected go to the above mentioned beneficiaries; the County also receives about 40% of the taxes collected. The Treasurer also collects and distributes taxes for the County’s Debt Service; the State’s Debt Service; the Rancho Viejo Special District; and the Children’s Trust. These beneficiaries receive the balance of the taxes collected roughly 20%.

An after-hours secure payment drop box is available in front of the administration building at the address below. Please place check or money order in an envelope and drop it in the secure box for collection.
